Notes on cleaning

I was doing a few basic cleaning chores on Bear over the last day or two and thought I would pass on some basic thoughts on cleaning. I had several places (shocks, etc) that had caked on grime. I went to the local Kragen and bought some Gunk. Its been a while since I have used this stuff and I was amazed at how worthless it is. I remember it doing a pretty good job on my motorcycles some 30 years ago, but the stuff they are selling now is worthless. I went into the garage and brought out the one thing that I have found that will clean almost anything, Easy off oven and Grill Cleaner. I can only find it at Smart and Final and it costs about $4 per can. I sprayed it on the shocks and in one coat, it cleaned off everything that Gunk refused to get after two coats. The active ingrediant is Lye, but that does not stop me from using it even on aluminum. If I am puting it on aluminum, I just wash it off after one minute.

I pulled the front two wheels of Bear on the curb to make a steep incline on the interior and then sprayed the Grill cleaner on the original rubber mat. It got all of the stuff that soap and water refused to touch. After two coats of grill cleaner with a rinse after each coat, I washed the off with warm water and Dawn detergent, then rinsed.

I use this stuff EVERY week on one thing or another. I have yet to find a better product for anything. The only thing I have never tried it on is ovens or grills.

Best Wishes
Lonnie
