In order to get additional floatation & traction, it was thought that duals would help, early Army Dodges (late 30s and up were capable of being dualled in case of soft ground or poor traction, remember, the widest tires in those days were 700 & 750 16s! They did not have a whole lot of surface area! They were dual chained for mud and creek fording operations too..this usually resulted in broken axles on the 1/2 tons..thus the 3/4 ton was designed with the 'new' 900 16 all terrain tires!! The earlier V series 1 1/2 tons could (and many were) also be dualled up in the front axle!
