I have seen several tags that said a number not matching the year of the truck, for example:

4312-1550 on an early WDX
4312-13914 on a first series (big tag was missing)
5182-5302 on a B-3

Obviously the cabs etc on the first series trucks were not made in 43.

My best guess....

In the WWII 3/4 trucks the tag generally has the first year of manufacturer for that style cab on it.

So your 1945 WC-51 would have a 4290-**** look here for more info:

My understanding of this is limited to trying to figure out a few 3/4 ton trucks, so anyone with more experience, please jump in.

As for the tag on your truck Tom, I wonder if when Dodge changed the dash in early 51 they also changed the starting number to 51 (the current year).

As the cab stayed the same for the most part after the gauge change, maybe that was the last of the number changes?

Or maybe the number was changed when the number got to a certain point?

In any case, given that several first series trucks have tags that start with 43, I doubt that the year is included correctly on the tag.

Any other thoughts??

Eric
