I had the same thing happen to a 48 Jeep truck back in the mountains while crossing a creek.

According to the Jeep dealer, the problem is caused by spindle bolts that work loose over time, allowing play between the spindle and knuckle, which strips the knuckle bolt threads, resulting in separation at the worst possible time (extra stress on the parts). Chances are your spindle’s round mounting surface is bent, have it checked.

My fix was another spindle and going from 3/8 bolts to 7/16 drilling out the spindle bolt holes and tapping the knuckle threads.
