I used to tow with a 1/2 ton 4X4, but if I was towing something heavy, sometimes it got pretty scary. I bought a 3/4 ton and I am much happier with the towing results.
As far as hitchs go, class IV is good enough, thats what I have on mine. Whether or not if it is a factory installed hitch or aftermarket hitch really makes no difference, as long as it is installed properly. Also make sure that the truck is equipped with a trailer brake though. Very dangerous without one.
