Windshield regulator question

I have partially disassembled my crank mechanism on the windshield of my '53 B3 flat fender. One thing wrong with it is that the teeth on the gear on the shaft with the hand crank are all bent over. The only other thing wrong is there's too much play in the other shaft such that the meshing gear un-meshes along the shaft direction. It looks like there's room to put a thicker gear to replace the one with the bent teeth. I guess I'll just have to make one? There seems to be room for a double-thick or greater gear along the primary shaft.
By the way, I'm impressed with what a cheap piece of crap the entire mechansim is, but I must admit it's lasted over 50 years. I think it broke early in its life and never got fixed until now, so the rest is in usable condition, hopefully for another 50. Thanks.
Tom
