Not sure I understand what he is trying to say is the problem. Since it is an early M37 with probably a spur gear tarnsmission, I suspect he has SAE 140W gear oil in the transmission, which when cold in the temperatures you mentioned, will drag down a cold engine down to the point of stalling. Check the PIF file for the correct oil wieght for your temperatures and change out the transmission oil to that weight. The last thing he will want to do is ride the clutch throw out bearing for 10 minutes unless he wants to replace it in the near future.
