This sounds like a story Gordon Maney would like for the PWA, as it is a true story that hearkens back memories of the good old days.
In my county we have a Mennonite electric repair shop for motors, generators, alternators, etc. They have been in business for longer than I can remember.
About 18 months ago I took my flatfender generator and voltage regulator in because there was no charging. The man (an older craftsman) first tested the generator and regulator, then after determining the regulator was good, took the generator apart, repaired it and gave them both back to me for the sum of $38.00!
These places still exist, but you may have to spend a little time asking/looking.
