with the engine stopped and the pto dis-engaged, grab the cable drum and try and rotate it..make sure the clutch dog is engaged, if it rotates more than an eith of the diameter or turns completely free..you have worn out the bronze gear. You can also remove the oil fill plug on the top of the gearcase and look at the bronze gear with a flashlight...this will give you a good look at it's condition..I have all parts in stock, bronze gear, steel worm (if needed) bearings, gaskets and seals plus complete de-clutch lever assys at far less cost than anyone else! (I have worn out a few winches!) Good luck!!
