In Northern Montana, we would get -50 to -55 on occasion (I saw it go to -60 once). Axle shafts are very brittle and will break easily. Starting a diesel was nearly impossible. Gasoline engines had to be preheated somehow, and we often left them idle for days on end. We used to change oil to light weights in the Fall. Dad used to build a tent over his Farmall tractor and use a weed burner torch to heat it. Most folks had some type of indoor parking for one reliable vehicle to help keep it warm. Interior Alaska and Canada are even colder!!
