Paul, I used an auto meter diesel tach that uses a signal from the alternator on my 1991 w-250. I have found it very reliable and accurate. It has a sender that straps to the outside of the alternator with what amounts to a large hose clamp. I really like it and I think you can go to the link below to see it. The one major draw back is that you need an optical tach to calibrate it. I picked one up on ebay for $45, but any diesel shop will have one.
