Depending on your state its a pain or fairly easy. In Kansas you can apply for a "quite title" where you have to file papers with the court and run a legal ad in the public newspaper for 1 day a week for 3 weeks. If no one protests then the judge signs off and you get your title. It costs about 200$ to do it yourself here or about 500$ to have a lawyer do it.
