Lewis and Clark had a Neufoundland on there travels. The Indians took it and they went and got it back but there was a good shoot out and a few indians lost there lives. They used the dog for protection and it warned them of bears ect while on there trail. Don't think they would eat a dog they brought with them for protection, while game was plentiful in the area.
