All this talk of auto's is interesting.

Poor Dodge they got a bad rap. Dodge builds poor auto transmissions.

We wont take into consideration that 9 out of 10 times the driver was probably the reason the tranny failed.

Truck overloaded beyond its design.

Cummins engine was upgraded in performance while the stock auto tranny was expected to take the additional power. In the muscle car world we always upgrade the trannys as well.

Owners manual clearly states to shut OD off when pulling heavy loads.

Did the driver take off easy at stop lights when loaded or stomp the Cummins and get into the rat race?!?!

Was the auto tranny serviced and fluid and filter changed? Maybe ahead of its time due to being used heavily?!

Does anyone besides me put the auto tranny in neutral after sitting for an extended period of time to prelube the tranny (first start in morning)? Or in N after a heavy pull to help cool it down?!

We wont dispute that generally a manual tranny has a longer life then an auto. And I understand sometimes shifting the gear allows more control.

One problem was the fact that the cummins had such a big amount of torque that when towing a heavy load (Which does create more then normal heat levels) while in OD the tranny was turning slower and the fluid was not moving through the tranny and out to the cooler at a fast enough rate to cool down. And heat is a big killer of auto trannys.
Due to the torque the tranny was not downshifting out of OD. V10's and 360's will shift in and out all the time and you get a reminder at that time to shut the OD off.

But with this being said you should refer back to your manual and what I said above turn the OD off when pulling a heavy load?!?!
