All this time, I thought Dodge went to the trouble of changing from the centered rear differential to accomodate the rear PTO drive shaft.

They were already producing a centered rear differential in the WC 3/4 tons. Except for the rear PTO capability, the major difference in the WC 3/4 ton and the POWER WAGON was the change to the two-speed transfer case fom the WC 1&1/2 ton.

If they had not wanted the rear PTO capability, the only change to the WC 3/4 ton drive line with the two-speed transfer case would have been to use the brake drum "U" joint mount that they were already using in the WC 1&1/2 ton.

I don't know if they reengineered the spring mounts on the WC 1&1/2 ton intermediate axle to use its off-center differential or if the axle was totally new, but the POWER WAGON rear axle was the only thing they did not already have in the parts inventory.

It would seem to me the "easy fix" you are speaking of was the way they had been doing it all along using parts they already had in production.
