On Moloka`i and other islands, When there are brush fires. They often use choppers with 250 or 500 gal water buckets.
One fire was going on and usually they will fly to the ocean to fill up(couple miles)
one pilot found a water tank about 20 ft diameter, 20 foot tall. This one was open top as it was just irrigation/cattle water.
Well this pilot decided it would be a good refill place. So he drops the bucket and fills up. Drops the water on the fire and heads back. Well he did this for a little while then the water level started to get low in the tank so he had to go lower to the ground. Forgot to mention there was a big tree next to this tank. His last few fills at this tank, he had his main rotor pretty much trimming the top of the tree!! my dad and myself were pretty amazed. They would also hot fuel the choppers as well and it was my understanding that hot fueling was something they would not do unless they really had to.
