I am repainting a 48 Plymouth coupe and had of course, the same question. I finally chose single stage enamel from PPG, with a hardener.
The reason I chose this is to get away from the "wet" look to bc/cc systems which don't look very authentic to me. I guess however you can tone down the clear coat sheen if you wish.
There are different types of enamels and my painter said some were more durable than others...hence his choice of a PPG type. I don't recall which were the good types of enamels however.
