Flat head motors

I just noticed a while ago that one of my many Dodge flat heads has the dipstick coming out of the side of the pan, all the other ones I have have the dipstick comming out of the block at the pan. The serial nos have a D then the numbers. It also has the hand crank nut on the front pulley, anyone know anything about it?
