...ALL factory smog equipment to be installed after 1965. All vehicles 1972 or newer must be tested every two years, so it doesn't really matter whether you use the '84 or the '86. Use the one with the best sheetmetal. CA law requires the motor to be original, or matching the factory original options for that year AND that VIN. Such as you cannot put a 440 in there if only a slant 6 was offered. There are exceptions, but they require a smog referee and $$$. You can put a newer motor into a vehicle, such as re-powering a Jeep with a V-8, HOWEVER the motor MUST be newer than the original, it cannot be older, and you must have all of the required emmissions equipment for that year motor, smog/computer/etc., exactly as it came from the factory. Also the DMV will reclassify your truck as that years (engine year) model.
The trick would be to make it completely stock or you will have a hard time passing the visual test. I've had my Jeep pass, only to be turned down because of the non-stock headers, a C.A.R.B. (CA Air Resources Board) sticker must be on every aftermarket part, stating that it is approved for use in CA, I waited 5 years for Borla to make CARB approved headers before I could install them and run legal!
