I agree with you to a point. If there wasn't free trade, most of the stuff I would currently buy from the U.S. would be so expensive, I couldn't afford to pay for it. For example, I bought a 1950 B1PW for $5000.00 U.S. and by the time I paided for it in Canadian funds it worked out to be $8050.00 (basically our dollar is 35-40% less then the U.S. dollar). Then with free trade I still had to bring it into Canada and then had to pay another 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST)on top of it. Without free trade there also would have been a Duty Tax on top of that as well. The same goes with anything that we have to buy out of the U.S.
Without freetrade I know as Canadians, we simply would not even consider buying very much product out the U.S. We just wouldn't be able to afford it.
I know that there are always good and bad points to everything, and Ray moving to Thailand seems like a bad thing. But at the same time you can live like a King in Thailand for next to no money, and the little amount that you make , you still seem like a millionare.
I have friends that live there 6 months a year and do it on 15,000 Canadian and have a great time the whole time they are there and stay in a nice place.
I'm sure that Ray will set up again in Thailand and start producing parts and kits again, and because he isn't starving to death will be alot happier.
But those are just my thoughts as an outsider.
Cheers! Garth Q
