Glad this works for you, but think how much better if you had used the correct resin. If you go the plastic route, use a low viscosity EPOXY resin, not polyester finishing resin. The local paint store will not stock this. Gougeon Bros. is one good place to get it by mail, & some marine catalogs. Polyester resin is not designed to bond to metal. Epoxy is, & has vastly higher tensile strength. Finishing resin by definition must contain paraffin wax which then contaminates the surface for paint. Epoxy doesn't need it. Neither type of resin should be used without the reinforcement of fiberglass cloth. There is not enough tensile strength. Fiberglass mat can not be used with epoxy but cloth can. Stop the rust first with OSPHO (phosphoric acid) or Rass-O-Nil, rinse thoroughly & dry. I will grant you that epoxy is harder to use, but it is the correct resin for metal.
