You are thinkling of a three-phase system, like several systems (mostly pumps) used with army generators. The starter will trun in the correct direction, not matter if you do positive or negative ground. The ammeter will read backwards, ie (-) for charging if you switch your system to negative ground and follow your schematic. Just swap the wires on the poles on the back of the ammeter to read correctly. Also if you hook it up a a negative ground, you will screw up your voltage regulator, since it is polarized for positive ground. The volt regulator is the only electrical componet that gets screwed up when switching from positive to negative ground.
