Were you in CA? In the early '70's, Dodge sold the CA highway department a bunch of trucks powered with a Mitsubishi 6 cyl diesel. Maybe they marketed that diesel to retail customers as a CA only deal. I think diesels got a break from the CA emissions rules. That setup worked well. In the late '70's, Dodge offered the Mitsubishi diesel as an option. I ordered a '77 van with the diesel. My order was cancelled and the diesel option was withdrawn. The bean counters had them using a smaller version of the Mitsu 6-cyl which was underpowered and had low (NO)customer acceptance. I do not know when they stopped offering the Perkins. I've been a Dodge man from 1972 and they offered no other diesel options until the Cummins in '94.
