Sounds like you have a 4 square pocket '46-'50 box. The early box takes a different tailgate. VPW carried a nice repo for them.
'54 should have what's known as second series (of three) box. It's a 3 flared pocket box with horiz. stiffening ribs and 45 degree flairboards.
Third series ('56-end) has 3 square pockets and flat top.
