i dont know if the steel is thinner or just a poorer quality. you see 50s vintage m37s with no rust more often than the b1s. something about dodge using recycled metal on the trucks & cars of that era.
you should be able to get some of the bed info from the data plates. from what i remember, one of the plates is a dimensional diagram
