Resistor rating==again, going to depend on the particular coil--usually around 1.4 ohms but don't run a wrong rating unless you are into coil toast.
Get hot==if you mean hot to the touch maybe yes, maybe no, again going to depend on the particular coil.
Easy way out==get a coil with a known operating voltage. Either buy a coil and the matching resistor--tell 'em it is for a '79 Dodge--or buy a coil designed to run at twelve volts. You can also rig this set up to run on reduced voltage and bypass the resistor for hotter spark start up.
Not trying to duck your question--just no point in asking you to hold your coil up to the phone.
