Your duty cycle comment is important here. Since most folks don't have industrial equipment, it is likely that the welder you have is not a 100% duty cycle device. Examine the literature that came with it, or with whatever welder you use, and see what the duty cycle is at the amperage you intend to weld.

If, for example, the duty cycle is 50% [that means it is safe to weld 50% of the time] at your chosen current level, you will need to weld for a short while, let's say three minutes, and then rest for three minutes. Otherwise you will overheat it and cause serious damage.
