You can find running slant sixes for pretty cheap. I'd buy a used running one and install that. Of course for that matter, you can find a running 318 for pretty cheap also. :-)

Back in the "Grapes of Wrath" days, you could drop the pan, unbolt the #5 cap, and push the rod and piston all the way up and the rings would hold it in place, put the pan back on, reuse the same oil, and run on them 5 cylinders.
