I'm still not convinced but I'll continue to do it this way. I'm convinced the grease was thinner in these good old days. There's no grease going to come out that hole until the whole knuckle is right full & I'm not convinced it's meant to be full like that.
I've actually been packing wheel bearing grease in by hand to roughly that level & only giving the zirc a shot of grease from time to time to lubricate the brass cone top bearing.
