My buddy pulled an axle out of his 94 Freightliner and put a box on the back for a camper. Those frames are hard to drill through!

Why do you want to shorten the frame? Cant you mount the water tank on it and use any excess frame for hauling something extra. Put a small flatbed over the un-used area?! Carry extra hose or a generator?
