all his problems went away when he dis-connected his factory tach from the coil. Otherwise, I'd guess that if a bulb blinks and you've got no spark, it's gotta be a coil problem for sure...or maybe it's the box...or something....
But those years also had a problematic ballast resistor- the double one that could go bad on one side- no spark at crank but they'll fire if you let off the key fast enough that it will fire on the 'run' side while engine is still cranking. Try "intermittant cranking" to check for that.
