When I built our shop we went with 14" I beam in the middle and 10 inch gerters. We used 10" C channel welded back to back for corner columns. It's as solid as a factory or warehouse..
This can be used for a very small shop or as large as you want to go. Ours is only 30' X 25' but is a huge bay to work in. Insulated and heated..
I poured a monolithic footing/slab, it came out looking very nice. 20 yards of concrete. No cracks after 4 years..
