As with any business, there are those who put a black eye on the rest of the industry and make it harder for those of us who give our clients a good job. For some reason, usually money, it seems that anyone with a truck and some tools calls himself a contractor only to pull the kind of stuff that causes these "black eyes". We don't want them out there anymore than the general public who falls victim does. As Norm said get everything in writing and check references as well as looking at their actual work. I have worked hard to build my business for the last 30 years to ensure that my clients are part of my "fanclub" by building their project to the best of my ability. Don't fall for the guys who say " Price, quality or speed, pick two".
