If there is a way to remove the top three seal retainer bolts without taking the flywheel out, it sure did escape me. I had to remove the trans and flywheel, as well as the pan and loosen the bearing caps to drop the crank enough to get the top half of the old seal out and the new in.

The seal was bonded to the 3-bolt plate, so there was no way to slip the old seal around and down. Whether this was the case 50 years ago when it was first installed, I do not know.

In my case, enough oil had leaked onto the clutch disc that I ended up replacing that (and the throw out bearing) as well.
