I agree with everything Garth says below, except that the steering unit is not a recirculating ball type. It's just a plain old worm and sector. The steering shaft actually is a press fit into the worm gear itself, so removal of the steering box from the truck is necessary, and then disassembly of the steering box is required. The shaft can then be pressed out of the worm gear.
