I was just thinking the same thing just before I got to your post. I've always heard the debate but no one I can remember has ever shown a different picture for the two. The dictionary says: that a gin is a machine for hoisting( among the several definitions).
So if someone is so sure that an a-frame hoist and a gin-pole hoist are two different devices, I challenge you to present the two pics with definitions associated with the pic from the publication,and please, something besides a hand drawn pic.
And as far as a spade being a spade, I have heard a round pointed shovel wrongly called a spade shovel for most of my life and a spade shovel wrongly called a shapeshooter (among several othe names)and have fruitlessly argued with those aliens:skulus thichus (anyone not from the south) and even showed them in every national tool catalog what the merchants order them by and what the correct name is. So a spade shovel is a sharpshooter to a wrongly taught worker and a
round point shovel is a spade shovel to one who doesn't know better but, don't insist someone is wrong unless you can back it up with credible evidence, but then you'll still have the twit that refuses to accept the facts and replies with the phrase, Thats what my grand-daddy called it! obviously they came from a long line of wrong people.
