Strange. The engine is not producing a lot of heat at an idle. I have seen it at night with lean conditions after running the vehicle on the road for awhile. Try adjusting the carb to a richer mixture at idle. Also unbolt the exhaust pipe to ensure no blockage. Do a check at night just to make sure your not getting a discolor from rust.
