Shortening speedo cable housing

Awhile agoi a fellow PW enthusiast mentioned his speedocable housing was just a bit too long for the cable. Mine is also. the slop in the housing lets the cable pull back from the transfer case and the speedo indications bounce awhile then quit. His solution was to uncrimp the end and shorten the housing. I want to do it also. I'd like to know which end he shortened and how exactly he uncrimped the ends and recrimped them afterwards. Anybody else done this?
