Ken;
The watering of Maple goes back, probably to the early native Americans, who called Maple Syrup, sweet water. Maple Watering is a GAP (Generally Accepted Practice). Even though the date of first watering is unknown, the NY State University at Cornell did a lot
extensive testing. This testing was connducted at the Maple Research Station at Lake Placid, NY. Simply Put, Watering can
increase your output of Maple for sale. At the same time, watering can help in making grade syrup. Grade syrup is, Light, Medium Amber and Dark Amber, and Maple Sugar Candy is included. Grade has nothing to do with quality, but rather color and the amount of Maple Taste you percieve. Cornell found that be watering Maple these goals could be acheived. However the process of watering is time consuming and back breaking. Until the advent of tubeing replacing buckets it was not really possible. As you know, Maple sap is drawn from the trees thru tubing with a 20 Hg vacuum. During the off season, water is piped back to the trees and allowed to soak and store in the root system. Cornell determined that daily watering for 30 minutes as follows increased production. Light amber trees, .28 gallons per minute per 100 cubic feet of tree crown, Medium amber .16, as above and Dark Amber .10
as above. For trees making Maple Candy, we actually draw down some of the water to make the syrup thick for candy production. This water must under all conditions be injected at the base of the tree, no higher than 3 feet. It is known as watering up. Many
people choose to inject the water much higher in the tree. This is called watering down. Watering Maple Syrup up or down is Illegal and will get you jail time. Gotta go water down , I can quadruple my output ha ha ha.

Paul
