Here is the problem. Virus's are being created and released into the enviroment EVERY DAY. A product like Norton is more likely to have a prompt protection and fix in place a long time before a "free" site. Their business is dependent on good reliable detection and fixes. You can set the computer to automatically download updates as they become available.
Note that virus protection is not the same as spam blocking or spyware removal. You computer is problably full of spyware agents as well causing it to run slower.
Keeping computers free from spam, spyware, and spam has evolved into a billion dollar industry.
It is a constant battle and you need professional strength tools if you want to continue to be a happy user on the internet.
I prefer Norton to McAfee for serveral reasons, but just make sure you buy a good name and a good product.
