Amp gauge shows current direction and volume into/out of battery. Battery hooks on one side of ammeter, everything else to other side.
I like the 2 wire system better, it gets the sensor voltage from the battery- so you get 14v to the battery, instead of 14v at alternator. This allows for resistance loss in wiring which could cut voltage at battery by 1-2 volts. Also, you could hook sensor wire to battery side of a battery separator to make up for the 1 volt loss in the diodes.
