Sounds like my winch. There was hardly any oil in it and there was a bit of water from condensation. At one point in its life some numbskull ran the winch with hardly any oil in it. Pretty much killed the winch worm gear. Also it was all pitted from having water in there. I never ran it, I took it apart but I'm sure I would have heard some of the same noises. I have to replace the bearings, winch worm shaft and the winch worm gear. Fortunately the brass gear was not harmed. It is going to be spendy but I was going to replace the seals and bearing anyways.
