very very good questions Clint. My only gripe with the process is the need to use 20 grit sand/blast material so that the stuff will stick to the metal.
I am unsure of the total durability especially in an off road and mudding situation if the coating would stay on and not be rubbed off especially with Dana & Judd behind the wheel in a mud pit haha.
The zinc would dullen down quite a bit and then begin to corrode and pit away in a short time just like pot metal does especially with no coating to protect it as it is porous. So you would have to "clear coat" it thus defeating the whole purpose of an easier solution and durability both coated and non coated zinc in my opinion.
Aluminum will do the same that is why when something is made with aluminum it is either clear coated like rims on vehicles or it is anodized which includes a tough clear coating to protect the aluminum as it breaks down rapidly as well. Get one chip in that clear coating and the aluminum begins to corrode.
I am going to get my lock rings cadmium plated on my FFPW. hopw this wasn't too confusing.
