The Falkirk Wheel
(no, not that one, the other one)

Gordon McMillan, an Inspection Engineer based in Falkirk, was happy to find an example of a 1939 one ton US Army Dodge truck for sale on the internet that he could add to his collection. The truck was duly bought and shipped from Logan in Utah back to Gordon's garage, however it turned up minus the spare wheel that was there when it left Utah, and none of the specialist dealers he knew could provide one as that type of wheel was used only on a limited number of vehicles for a short period in 1939 and 1940.

An appeal on the Internet brought an offer of a suitable wheel from Russ Erickson in Evanston, Wyoming. He had recovered it from an old mine near Saint George, Utah, about fifteen years ago, and had to winch a wrecked truck down a mountain in temperatures of over 100oF to do it.

Russ offered the wheel free, but the shipping costs would have been considerable. Fortunately Ron Wild, (left, above) a specialist carbon fibre development engineer who worked with Russ, was coming to Scotland to visit a sister plant in Muir of Ord, so he volunteered to hand carry the heavy wheel to Inverness Airport where Gordon was glad to collect it. The wheel is now safely with the truck, ready for restoration.

What does the other Falkirk Wheel look like ?
http://www.falkirk-wheel.com/
