Vacuum Gage Reading

Folks,

I decided to check the vacuum on my freshly rebuilt 230 engine, and I saw that it fluctuates slowly and irregularly between 17 and 18. This is just a hair below the "Normal Engine" range on the gage (actually at the upper end of the "Late Ignition Timing" range). I have the high-performance camshaft from Vintage Power Wagons, and I was wondering if that could be the cause.

I talked with another guy who said his 230 runs rock steady at 20 on the vacuum gage, but I think he has a stock camshaft in his engine.

I've adjusted everything I can think of, exactly as called for in the specs - valve clearances, idle speed and mixture, dwell angle. Ignition timing is the only thing I have set differently from specs. Right now, it's set at 5 degrees before top dead center.

Any thoughts, or is that just normal? Anyone else out there running the VPW camshaft?

Thanks,

Matt
