Taking what you said at face value, if the front driveshaft is truly being driven by the transfer case and therefore driving the front pinion, you have one of several possibilities.
You don't say if there is noise accompanying this failure. A broken axle shaft will do that. A lockout hub that has failed internally could do that, Catastrophic failure of the ring gear could do that, although there would have been or would be significant noise.
