Running 10w30 should be fine. If the engine is gonna be ran hard in extreme conditions that are hot 10w40 or maybe 20w50 might be a good thing to use. On a 318 I have I run 10w30 all year long with no troubles. You can tell a difference in the the engine when you run a heavier oil.

As for noisy lifters on a rebuild......theres 3 things that come to mind.

You have a problem in the area that needs corrected and not with heavier oil.

You have an exhaust leak making you think you have noisy lifters. Probably around the exhaust manifold area.Warped manifold or a bad gasket. Headers are famous for leaking.

Or you are hearing things and its the normal sound of the lifters.
