Another person is always a good idea when doing
this kind of work. A deadman switch in YOUR hand
is the best bet. Why? Presuming the guy in the
cab exists, is alert, and doesn't stomp the gas
or brake instead of the clutch.... Then you have
the lag time to contend with: your reaction time
(@.40 seconds on the average) plus his/her (if it
is a "winch wench") reaction time (another .40
seconds if they hear you the first time AND know
what you're yelling about). With the gear
reduction on a winch (@30:1) plus the gear
reduction in the PTO (@10:1)the winch doesn't
turn much once the ignition is off even as the
engine winds down. 300 engine rev's would turn the
winch one turn. At a 600 RPM idle, that would be
a 30 second wind-down time.
