I have made and successfully used a modified axle
shaft for wich anchors for years. Cut a piece of
thickwall scrap black or galvanized* pipe about 3'
long and just slightly larger in diameter that he shaft.
Weld scrap plate tabs about 2" X 6" to either
side about 16" up. (*Don't breathe the smoke from
galvanized metal welding. Use a fan to keep it away from you). Cut
about 8" from the end of the shaft and weld it
of similar bar stock into the end of the pipe, and cut it to
a wedge point with a torch. When you use this
for an anchor, drop an axle shaft in the top and drive both into
the ground. The larger pipe and the "ears" hold
much better that just a shaft. When you're done
pull the shaft out and bend the pipe down with a
sledge it you can't get it back out. The shaft
keeps the pipe from bending under load and from
mushrooming when being driven in. If you have
to leave it you're out about $5 rather than the
price of a shaft. You can use one shaft to drive several
anchors and they are lighter and don't roll around.
