Rent a bigger truck (u-haul or ryder van) if your going far. Your dealing with basic physics. I had a pinto station wagon with a V-8 I built. It was geared for a tow truck (accidentally put a C-5 truck trans in) I could have TOWED a loaded Dump truck......I would NEVER stop it if I had. The body towing must persudade the towed body to turn, remain straight and above all STOP. If your trailer doesn't have brakes already, this is a pointless discussion (and even then, if they cannot handle the weight on the trailer they are worthless.
If the towed package weighs more than the towed vehicle it will PUSH you through the red light into the path of the Semi-truck approaching. BE REAL SCARED, get the right equipment for the job. Best recommendation I saw here was upgrade the tow vehicle, or just tow the explorer with the Dodge. (if it has good brakes) Some people get lucky towing heavy items with underated vehicles, if I were that lucky I'd buy a lottery ticket instead. Your call! Regards WAW
PS: borrow an Explorer, load your trailer and try it out on a local WIDE less traveled back road. This will give you a feel for Power/Braking limitations. Try one or two "PANIC" stops, tell us what the results were. WAW
